Today we further investigated the application of Oersted's Principle, ran current through wire to see how it deflected the compass needle, and coiled the wires to show how constructive reinforcement of this magnetic field could be used to produced an electromagnet... Today we watched the first part of E=mc2 (start at 4:56). We learned about Michael Faraday's amazing discoveries and insights into the connection between electricity and magnetism and the development of the branch of physics called electromagnetism. We also learned Oersted's Principle and the Right Hand Rule (we did practice on this and will work on a practice sheet on Monday) >> E=mc2 Movie >> Online Applet for Oersted's Principle >> Right Hand Rule Advanced Explanation of how Magnets "Work" Today we investigated the fundamental properties of magnetism and introduced the domain theory of magnetism. We also started to learn about the link between electricity and magnetism - simple demonstration. Domain Theory of Magnetism - Explained below... Introduction to CourseCourse expectations, course overview, highlights, etc. Fundamentals of MagnetismWhat is magnetism? What are magnets? We will investigate the mysterious nature of magnets. We will learn to draw magnetic fields and learn what they look like. Magnetic Field Lines - Good ExplanationYou are required to watch this 3 minute video for homework. |
