Generating Electricity in Sewers!

Today we will work a little on completing the Transformer Problems that we started on Friday (they are due tomorrow at the end of the day). We will also then start work on developing our Electricity Production Concept Map Activity.

Transformers are used to step-up (increase) or step-down (decrease) voltage. They are extremely important in our everyday lives. They are used to step-up voltage at a power generating station so that electricity can travel long distances with very little energy loss (low current flow) to your neighbourhood and then is stepped back down so you can use it in your home at safe voltages and high current. They are used in your cell-phone and computer chargers as well - look at the back and you'll see. But...how do they work?

Building Simple Speakers (Motor Principle in Action!)
Today we are building speakers and then learning about Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction.
Today we completed our investigation into Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction and then we created some simple generators which use this principle. We will also look at how electricity is produced from hydro plants, fossil fuel plants and wind turbines.
Today you will write the quiz on the basics of magnets and electromagnetism. You should know the basics of magnets, domain theory of magnetism, Oersted's principle, Right Hand Rules, electromagnets and the equation as well as the motor principle.
Watch the first part of E=mc2 (start at 4:56 and only the part on E - the Michael Faraday part). Learn about Michael Faraday's amazing discoveries and insights into the connection between electricity and magnetism and the development of the branch of physics called electromagnetism.
Today we will complete the motor principle worksheet and build our mini-motors (see previous day for hand-out)
Work Period: today you will be completing the 3 example problems and then completing and handing in the 4 question electromagnet problems. Please make this very neat, show your work, include units and box your final answers.
